A lot of older homes are still running on 100 amp service. That was fine decades ago, but modern homes have a lot more going on - A/C units, electric ranges, dryers, microwaves, and more. That original panel just wasn't built to handle it all.
On this job, we pulled out the old 100 amp panel and installed a new 200 amp Siemens combination meter-main panel at a new location, right in line with what SMUD requires. Moving the panel isn't always part of the conversation, but when the utility has specific placement requirements, we handle it correctly from the start - no shortcuts.
The new panel is fully labeled and organized. Every circuit has a purpose and a place - plugs, lighting, kitchen circuits, A/C, oven, dryer, range, and even surge protection on both ends. There's also a dedicated space reserved for future solar input, which is required in California. That kind of forward-thinking setup means the home is ready for whatever comes next.
This is exactly the kind of upgrade that makes a real difference in how a home runs day to day. No more tripped breakers from running too many things at once. No more wondering if the panel is keeping up. Just clean, reliable power with room to grow.
Panel upgrades are one of those things people put off until something goes wrong. Getting ahead of it - especially when SMUD has requirements that need to be met - means the work gets done right the first time, on your terms.
