Zinsco Sub Panel Replacement with GFCI Pool Protection

Zinsco panels have a bad reputation - and for good reason. They were installed in homes across the country for decades, but they've been flagged by electricians and home inspectors alike for failing to trip properly under fault conditions. That means the breaker that's supposed to protect your home sometimes just... doesn't. When we pulled this one out, it was exactly what you'd expect from a panel that age.

Here's what we were working with - a Zinsco sub panel that had clearly been in service for a long time. The breakers still had their original red and green handles, the label was hand-written and partially covered in tape, and the whole thing was crammed with wiring that had been added to over the years. Not exactly confidence-inspiring when you think about everything that runs through a panel like this - AC units, a furnace, pool equipment, laundry, kids' rooms.

The mid-job phase is always a little chaotic. All those circuits have to come out cleanly before anything new can go in. We take the time to identify every wire and trace every circuit before reconnecting anything. That's not optional - it's just how this work has to be done safely.

The new sub panel is clean, properly labeled, and built to handle the load this home actually puts on it. We also added dedicated GFCI breakers for the pool circuits - two of them - which is a code requirement for a reason. Water and electricity don't mix, and GFCI protection is the last line of defense when something goes wrong near a pool or spa. It cuts power in a fraction of a second if it detects a ground fault.
